The Importance of Open Formats
[This is Martey Dodoo] As you might recall, I wrote about the first post in the series, which focused on music file formats like OGG and MP3. Again, I am not going to try to explain the problems of closed formats when Garrity has already done such a good job.
Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.
[Actsofvolition.com] Acts of Volition: Update: The talk by Ralph Giles of Xiph.org (the organization behind the Ogg Vorbis audio codec and the Theora video codec mentions that Yahoo is shipping the DirectShow (Windows Media) plugins for these open-source formats with their Yahoo Music service download. In simpler terms, this means that people who have download the Yahoo Music player can automagically play Ogg Vorbis and Theora files in Windows Media Player.
[Marteydodoo.com] This is Martey Dodoo » Blog Archive » Increasing Ogg Vorbis ...: I am sure that you recognized MP3, but what the hell is OGG? Since I now understand I am horrible at explaining technical issues (I like to think that I am better in person, but then I can see when you are getting confused), I am going to refer you to Stephen Garrity’s post on the topic, “The Catch-22 of Open Format Adoption, Part 1: Music.”
[Martianrock.com] J5s Blog » Blog Archive » Found this out today: The CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation - Canada’s public broadcaster) is experimenting with Ogg streams of CBC Radio One and Radio Two: http://www.cbc.ca/listen/ogg.html
[Zapyourpram.org] Zap Your PRAM: While having been given the worst time-slot ever (starting at 10PM on Friday night after Dan’s talk), Art Rhyno made us all want to stay up even later. Art’s talk was also the first of many that turned librarians into the heros of the conference.
