Intel Macintosh rumors true!
[geek ramblings] I hadn't been keeping too close an eye on this, because we've got higher priorities right now than buying new computers. But there have been rumors lately about some sort of deal between Apple and Intel. The speculations mainly fell into two camps: 1) Apple would release a new Pentium-based Macintosh computer, or 2) Intel would begin producing a new PowerPC compatible
Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.
[Blog.wired.com] The Cult of Mac Blog: As far as I know, this is the first time one of Sanada's imaginative, playful designs has been realized as a product. Of course, Sanada has been designing mock Apple products for years. There's no way to tell if Altec Lansing were inspired by Sanada's mockup, or dreamed up the design independently. Just like Sanada's mockup, Altec Lansing's speakers are reminiscent of bazooka-style boomboxes.
[Macblog.org] MacBlog: The Macintosh Weblog: Otellini had a startling confession: He spends an hour a weekend removing spyware from his daughter's computer. And when further pressed about whether a mainstream computer user in search of immediate safety from security woes ought to buy Apple Computer Inc.'s Macintosh instead of a Wintel PC, he said, "If you want to fix it tomorrow, maybe you should buy something else."
[News.yahoo.com] Apple/Macintosh News on Yahoo! News: At its Worldwide DeveloperConference (WWDC) today, Apple announced plans to begin deliveringmodels of its Macintosh computers using Intel microprocessors by June 2006,and to transition all of its Macs to using Intel microprocessors by the endof 2007. Apple previewed a Mac OS X Tiger system running on an Intel-basedMac to the audience of developers attending Apple CEO Steve Jobs’keynote address.
[Theappleblog.com] The Apple Blog » Apple and Intel, ”Official: There are also a number of analysts who agree with me that the move seems unlikely. And again, I covered that in last weeks post, including the strange situation that would occur if Apple decided to go the Intel route of the HyperTransport bus (an AMD technology, already in use on the G5-based Macs). There’s also the potential problem that Intels 64-bit chips are nowhere near as well received as either the G5 or AMD CPUs, which could mean a potential backwards step at a time when Apple are pushing 64-bit like crazy.
[Gigaom.com] Om Maliks Broadband Blog » Steve Jobs, like Howard Hughes, Mystifies: Expect hardware sales numbers to behave wierd (i.e. low and unpredictable) while Mac faithful decide what this means to them. Expect something like the 4 stages of denial or something similar but I think people will eventually reach the state of “If it still runs OS X, and is secure as OS X is now, and my apps will still be supported on either platform, then why do I care if its Intel or PPC under the hood?” Plus, Mac guys know their chips are fast, but not the fastest (except in very narrow application that take full advantage of the vector capabilities) so now they would be on cutting edge CPU performance too.
