Love the Mac > growl 0.7: why I love notification

[walkah | striving towards mediocrity] the longer I go using my powerbook as my primary (only) desktop machine, the deeper certain things become ingrained in my daily routines. one big example is growl. so, in honour of the latest release (0.7) i thought i'd publicly exclaim just how much i like having growl. for those that haven't tasted this particular kool-aid: growl provides a framework so that applications (on Mac OS X) can create little popups when "things happen". so, some examples are : when the song changes in iTunes, new mail arrives, or someone says something in iChat or Adium. the interesting thing is that human brains are *really* good at recognizing patterns, and determining (almost instantly) relative importance. so, without really looking up from the code, email or blog entry i'm currently writing, i can stay on top of other things going on - without having to switch applications, etc. for example: i'm currently writing a blog post, and without changing apps (or even pausing) i can see that iTunes just...

[iLife by Blake] Using OS X hack, Growl: Any application can send a notification to Growl, which will display an attractive message on your screen. Growl currently works with a growing number of applications." I'm using for ecto blog post messages, Apple Mail app, and iTunes (display's next song and album art). It is saving me time switching back to apps for status type info. It also provides a consistent UI for apps to interact with the user.

[Grabthar's Hammer] Stop in for a look-see: For example today I came across this blog. It is all about one man’s fight with the Sony Corporation. The same company that manufactures DVD burners will remove particular DVDs of theirs from internet auctions depending on the distribution rights. This same company advertised a player to which they suggest you “download” MP3s (this was before the iTunes store and their contemporaries).

[Command-tab.com] Command-Tab » Blog Archive » Mac OS X USB LCD: At right you can see an image of the circuit I’ve put together. The chip on the left is a Cypress USB interface from Delcom Engineering, and the one on the right is a standard MAX232 chip, which converts signal levels to RS-232 from the Cypress chip. Using these two together, you can send RS-232 data from your Mac, and I’ve connected it to a serial LCD from Scott Edwards Electronics (the most expensive part of the project), and am able to send any data to the LCD, even control the backlight!

[Blog.bitflux.ch] Bitflux Blog :: iTunes Music Store Switzerland opened: Update: Ok, migros.ch is back up, their store is at http://download.exlibris.ch. It uses mostly WMA and has terrible DRM, like you can only burn it 10 times to a CD, you can only copy it 5 times to a portable player (whatever that means). I don't even know, if you can listen to the song on a differentPC (the page wasn't very clear about that).

[Garenewing.co.uk] Nucleus: blog at garenewing.co.uk: The first thing to hit me was the 'stage-school' acting, like it was done by the kids from Fame. I feel slightly guilty saying this as the cast were obviously talented with great singing voices, but they're the kind of voices very much in vogue in today's pop-outfits - that sort of warbly-vibrato with the occasional growl to kick-start a note. The choreography was done by numbers and was about as original as anything you can see from the latest manufactured pop clones on Top of the Pops. Queen's songs themselves were a mixed bag.

[Chuckbrown.com] The Slightly-Less Self-Indulgent Blog, by Chuck Brown: Tonite, I popped onto iTunes to see if some of the hard-to-find songs I’ve been searching for for years were available yet. Not too many. I guess I love a lot of stuff that other people don’t…or else (as in the case of “Maybe I’m Amazed") there are complicated legal reasons why they aren’t available so far.
