I did find that holding down the Option key allowed me to deselect items, though the behaviour was a little erratic and would sometimes deselect some items and then suddenly start adding to the selection in the way your post described.

I’d love it if someone came up with the same idea but built it on top of the existing iCal, addressbook and other tools existing in OSX. I want a view/shell, not a complete replacement.
