Love the Mac > Build your own x86 Mac
[The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)] There are many people eagerly awaiting the pending Intel-based Macs for a variety of reasons, including the 'build-your-own-computer' crowd. So far this group has had to restrict its efforts to the Windows and Linux worlds, but Build Your Own Mac is a new website that hopes to change that. Articles include how to construct a system, how to install OS X on the system you create (regardless of what Apple tells you) and challenges the authors are currently aware of.

[Third Level Digression] Something old, something new, something borrowed...: See, even the 5.1 soundtracks in movies are compressed, which causes a limit to the sound, and the intent of a movie soundtrack is usually not pristine music delivery anyway. When the first song started, I stood gobsmacked, pricking up my ears like a cat homing in on a mouse, because I'd never heard sound that full and bottomless before - outside of an original 24-track master played in a recording studio. There is no discernable limit to the high end or low end on this recording.

[Blog O'Stuff] Some thoughts on Apple's switch to Intel: The switch to x86 also brings with it the possibility of porting WINE to Mac OS. Aside from allowing existing Mac users to run Windows software, a properly-done MacWINE would ease the transition from Windows to Mac, much as it can for new Linux users. Unlike VirtualPC, which is a full blown hardware emulator which enables you to install Windows as an application under Mac OS, WINE Is Not an Emulator.
[Securityawareness.blogspot.com] Security Awareness for Ma, Pa and the Corporate Clueless: Several commenters (mostly professional IT guys) have taken Schwartau to task, and insisted that they do nothing special to their own Windows environment - no Virus or adware protection - and they have no infections and do not spend a lot of time dealing with the kinds of problems (OS reloads, etc.) that Schwartau complained about.

[Macworld.com] Macworld: Editors' Notes: Editors' Notes Weblog: Although Steve’s demo of Rosetta was impressive, there are many apps that won’t be able to use it—according to this 1.5MB PDF of universal binary developer documentation, it won’t support code that uses unique G4 or G5 features, nor that which uses Altivec. So it will be interesting to see how well the transition works—I can’t imagine using my Mac without some of the current set of apps I run, so Apple really needs to get the developers on board with this.
