Love the Mac > Apple Adapter Settlement Claims

http://phaedo.cx [Switch-Case /] I got a letter in the mail last week while I was in Chicago from a settlement claims administrator at Apple. Apparently there is a class action suit pending over the high failure rates inherent in the “yo-yo” or “covered adapters” that shipped with iBooks and that were sent to people when Apple recalled the old black adapters from G3 powerbooks.

[Class Action Questions - Legal Questions Answered on the Vioxx, Bextra and Asbestos (Mesothelioma) Class Action Suits] Own an Apple Power Adapter?: All this is “thanks to a lawsuit filed earlier this year by Steven Clark on behalf of those of us who bought Powerbooks or iBooks with faulty or recalled power adapters. Apple has reached a tentative settlement agreement with the plaintiffs (that would be us, collectively) and a final approval hearing is scheduled for September 27, 2005.”

[The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)] Steven Clark v. Apple Computer: Power Adapter Class Action Suit: The Apple Adapter Settlement Claims Administrator informs me that I might have a $20-$35 refund coming to me, thanks to a lawsuit filed earlier this year by Steven Clark on behalf of those of us who bought Powerbooks or iBooks with faulty or recalled power adapters. Apple has reached a tentative settlement agreement with the plaintiffs (that would be us, collectively) and a final approval hearing is scheduled for September 27, 2005.

[the darkerside to rants] The power of the Apple: I had literally outgrown the iBook by this time. Too much CPU intensive stuff was going on, and I was also getting heavier into the photo editing, so I ended up really taxing the G4 iBook to it’s max and more screen estate was clearly needed. So I bit the bullet, Apple upgraded the Powerbooks to a new G4 and although it wasn’t the dual core that many had hoped for it was still way better than I could get in the new iBook. So I shelled out 3K and bought a top of the line Powerbook G4 (incidentally, this is the machine I am typing this on right now).

[HD For Indies] HD For Indies Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Version 0.54: You can store uncompressed HD on a FireWire 800 drive, but no FireWire solution of any sort is fast enough for uncompressed HD (with the exception of 720p24 footage, and then only maybe). FireWire 800 RAID boxes are an attractive option for storage, either for mirroring (RAID 1, but be careful of throughput limitations) or RAID 3 or 5 (for fault tolerant online editing storage). Beware bus contention issues - the FireWire 800 and 400 buses, even on G5's are really all just one bus. There can be issues of trying to capture from a FireWire camera to a FireWire drive.

Handcoding.com[Handcoding.com] Hand Coding » Blog Archive » Fabulous Powerbooks: I’ve occasionally had throughts about buying a laptop and, especially with WiFi proliferation, they’re becoming more and more useful. In particular, I started reconsidering Apple when those switch commercials came out. Mac die-hards, at least the ones I’ve talked to, tend to consider them cheesy, but I found them rather down-to-earth and unpretentious.

Mjtsai.com[Mjtsai.com] Michael Tsai - Blog - iBook G4: It was on my desk only about a week after ordering, which is quite impressive considering how new the iBook G4 is. I had tried to order the iBook G3 (Dual USB) that it replaces direct from Apple, so as to get the developer discount. At the time, the model I was interested in was more than six months old, yet after nearly two months Apple still hadn’t shipped it. I finally got tried of waiting on hold only to be told that they didn’t know why it hadn’t shipped, but that it surely would soon.
