[Tigersprout] So, on Monday Steve Jobs will announce that future Mac hardware will run on Intel produced PowerPC/RISC CPUs and/or Intel chipsets.

[Our View From Madison: www.Zmetro.com] Apple & Intel? Is it about the DRM?: Apple has used IBM's PowerPC processors since 1994, but will begin a phased transition to Intel's chips, sources familiar with the situation said. Apple plans to move lower-end computers such as the Mac Mini to Intel chips in mid-2006 and higher-end models such as the Power Mac in mid-2007, sources said.In light of recent moves by Intel to bake DRM into their chipsets, along with Apple's growing DRM platform (Fairplay, iTunes and Quicktime - which run on windows pc's and Mac OS X's), this smells to me like a deal based on a big DRM rollup - paving the way for Apple's much discussed HD movie/video download system.
[renaissance chambara] Tech silly season Apple and Intel reports Every s...: Intel has a number of problems that would make it unappealing to Apple. Its processors have hit a performance roadblock, it is being outgunned in the performance stakes by rival AMD and the EPIC architecture of the Itanium (the processor closest to Apple's PowerPC chipsets from IBM and Motorola) is a dogs dinner that the industry including Itanium development partner HP has largely ignored. In addition, the amount of money flowing into the PowerPC architecture from IBM contracts with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft means that it will receive an addtional boost in the arm. The sales of consoles will encourage IBM to make the chipmaking process ever cheaper to profit from the volume business coming its way.
[Ztuff] Apple x86 rumors: It's a certainty that Apple talks to Intel on a continuous basis. Ignoring the circling rumors of a Mac operating system running on Intel (they were true for several years in the 90's, MacOS X originally ran well on x86 hardware and it would be no surprise to hear they keep it alive in the labs), there are several other reasons that they'd be talking and even making agreements on purchases.
[Take a bite] Tablet Mac rumors mature: Touch only (white touch pen), leastthe version I saw. The interesting thing that makes the Intel rumor more credible is that the talks were supposedly focused on low-power chipsets like the Centrino for the PowerBook (I think it's unlikely) or a tablet-style mac. Apple has denying rumors that it is ditching IBM's PowerPC chips in favor of Intel's and that makes sense. It wouldn't even be a PowerBook anymore.
[Mt. Molelog] Google News Carries Press Releases: The settlement, though, phases in over time. For the first three years, Intel has agreed not to sue Via for making processors that come with buses and pin structures that are similar to Intel's products. Similarly, Intel has granted Via a license to make chipsets that are pin- and bus-compatible with Intel products for four years, and has agreed not to sue Via or its customers for using pin- and bus-compatible chipsets for another year beyond that.
