Quad-Core Nehalem Mac Pros Support 16GB RAM - Mac Rumors

[MacRumors : Mac News and Rumors] According to Apple's official specs, the Quad-Core Mac Pros only support up to 2GB modules in its 4 memory slots resulting in a maximum installed memory of only 8GB. This finding by OWC means the maximum installed memory in these new machines is at least 16GB.

[Applefritter - Obscure, Unusual, Exceptional.] I got a PowerMac G5 dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC machine at a great price, so I thought I might play around with it a bit (I'm a PC guy). After acquiring the machine I read a large number of online complaints about these units failing due to 'thermal runaway.' It seems that Apple and IBM had some issues with these, to put it mildly.

[Gizmodo Australia] I mean if you have the money, go for it, it's a nice bundle of hardware and it's built solidly, but ever since mac steered away from Motorola's chips and went intel, you're really just paying a shit tonne for that nice bundle and workmanship, you can find comparable hardware with comparable workmanship from other manufacturer's for much cheaper and just hackintosh it. Or better yet install Linux!

[TheAppleBlog] This was a basic, $999 entry-level iBook with a plain-vanilla, drawer-loading CD-ROM drive and a smallish 20 gigabyte IBM hard drive, and it remained essentially stock (not that there’s a whole lot you can do to upgrade or expand an iBook anyway) throughout my ownership except for being maxed out with 640MB of RAM (not enough toward the end of its workhorse days).

[BindApple] My choice would be to upgrade the PowerMac G4, or simply keep it the way it is, as long as everything's fine. After all, think about this - you can upgrade the processor up to 2 GHz, or dual 1.8 GHz, so even Leopard will run on this old machines without too many problems.
