Back in Mac! Making the switch, Perhaps?

Incidentally I don't know how to do this in all MS-Windows apps such as Opera that I am using right now and I find it really slow in MS-Word.

Freezing the play order of a shuffled iTunes playlist

http://ithink.ch/blog [Ölbaum's Delirium] The problem with shuffled playlists in iTunes is that if I quit iTunes at the end of the day, relaunch it the next day and want to resume playing the same playlist where I left it, iTunes will shuffle it again, meaning I'm likely to hear songs I already heard the day before. On the other hand, if I turn shuffle off, it will sort the songs in the order I put them when I created the playlist, which is likely to be in Artist/Album order since this is how I browse my library when making a playlist.

Apple/Intel: Wise move/disaster?

[Bleeding Edge] Others, however, indicated that there was never a better time to buy a Mac. We've been talking to some local retailers, and they report that there is some increased interest in the G5s, on the apparent reasoning that either this will be as good as it gets, or Apple's going to run out of stock of the things. It (sort of) just works!

[Blood, Sweat and Tiers] Anyway, I'm showing my age by saying it's 19 years since I last had a Mac, so I knew things would have changed quite a bit in the meantime. I've been reading 'Mac OS X The Missing Manual' while waiting for my machine to arrive so I already had some of the keyboard shortcuts down before I had the box open. Which brings me to the first of my observations about the oft-repeated cries of "It just works" by the MacCult members...don't get me wrong, this little baby is a beautiful thing, but in the interests of full disclosure, I thought I'd jot down my notes on the switching experience...

The Apple-Intel Thing (Updated)

http://westexpressway.typepad.com/westexpressway [West of the Expressway] Technically, it wouldn't be that hard to port Mac OS X to an x86 processor architecture. The core UNIX-like OS layer, Darwin, has already been ported to run on a very narrowly defined Intel platform (the 440BX chipset), so porting the upper layers of the OS would just need a recompile: only apps which touched on assembly-level instructions would need significant rewriting. Both Apple and NeXT managed architecture switches in the past; Apple from 680x0 to PowerPC, NeXT from 680x0 to a variety of platforms including x86, SPARC, and HP PA-RISC.

In this case it is a little more difficult - you need to know who the ISP of the wireless router is and add their dns server’s ip address to the dns server field. Now, you can add as many servers as you want to this field, so if you can get a list of the major ISPs dns servers, it might be well to add them to this field - it shouldn’t be too hard to get this info - Google for it, or ring the ISPs helplines!

[The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)] That's why they're releasing the first commercial Intel-based Mac within a year, this build of OS X for Intel is very raw, product of a "fall-back" plan, there's a lot of workaround to do to make the OS ineract natively and seemlessly with the processor. Apple & Intel’s Coupling.

[NullMind’s Lair] As for my investment, i guess mine just became even better, when the new Intel’s come out, allot of people will be weary of the change, and looking for high end G5’s like mine, which will still be valuable, a good example of that is the price a high end G4 commands these days, just because it can boot OS9… for those who wont change

More than just intel coming from Apple

http://restiffbard.com [Restiffbard] Dave Hyatt has just made a new post on his Surfin Safari developer blog. Recently there was a big hub-bub about Apple’s cooperation with the opensource community. There were complaints that users of Konqueror were expecting the same updates that Safari gets instantly. The Konqueror devs fired back that Apple doesn’t make it that easy to integrate these changes.

Apple is switching to Intel

[Red & Yellow Make Green] If their is no protection against non-Apple branded hardware running OSX, the loop will be blown wide open. I can’t believe that Steve Jobs thinks that people will still buy Apple hardware just because its shiny. If it runs just as well on a slightly slower, but half as cheap Dell or HP, why would people want to buy from Apple? Steve has to have some other component that makes the new Intel OSX only work with Apple hardware.

Intel Macintosh rumors true!

geek ramblingshttp://dougal.gunters.org [geek ramblings] I hadn't been keeping too close an eye on this, because we've got higher priorities right now than buying new computers. But there have been rumors lately about some sort of deal between Apple and Intel. On "The Switch"

Richard Bluestein's Weblog[Richard Bluestein's Weblog] We’ve gone from OS X on Intel being the latest example of Paul Thurrott’s mania, to staring down the barrel of a gun which says that all future Macintosh’s will essentially be tarted up Wintel PCs running OS X. What with Intel’s latest push to be more than a chip vendor, to be a platforms company, Apple probably won’t even have to design the chipset or any of the internals anymore. Jonathan Ive and his crew will just have to pick this years colour scheme and they can go to market with that.

OS X on x86

birdhouse.orghttp://birdhouse.org/blog [birdhouse.org] They survived, and were better off for it. We watched as Be moved from the Hobbit processor to PowerPC, and then to x86. The x86 transition worked so well for Be that we heard Jean-Louis saying things like "Our only regret is that we waited so long to do it." G5 vs. x86 and Mac OSX vs. Linux

Slashdot: News for nerds, stuff that mattershttp://slashdot.org [Slashdot: News for nerds, stuff that matters] At the presentation, they mentioned the G5's potential, but noted that it was closer to the Intel architecture in the sense that each CPU shared a memory controller (but it's not hampered by the bus). The Opteron's HyperTransport model is simply more scalable. Apple got the point, but whether they will address this deficiency in their Xserves (particularly the Cluster Nodes, where it makes sense for massively parallel systems) remains to be seen. All I know is that *I* love the performance of our G5 systems, Xserve and desktop alike.
