Starting to Feel Bloated

[Jeremy Boles (Personal Website)] Some other pieces of software try and do all of this in one package but what happens if I like the way Entourage handles my calendar but not the way it handles my contacts or my emails? Sure I can only use Entourage for the calendar, but now I have this bloated program open that I’m only using part of. I love Apple’s approach (I realize that they definitely aren’t the first to do this) with having the different programs interface with each other, but keeping the focus for each program separate. If I want to use Thunderbird instead of Mail, no problem.

Griffin Powermate

Binary Bonsaihttp://binarybonsai.com [Binary Bonsai] First of all it's a bit more flimsy than it looks. I had quite honestly expected a hi-fi-like jog wheel, which feels sturdy when you operate it; which it almost is, but not quite. And secondly it doesn't click. Since most of the things we do on computers are digital and not analog (ie: scroll 3 lines down), it would make sense if you could feel how much you were telling the computer to move.

Logic Express 7 vs. GarageBand 2

[West of the Expressway] We record our guitar and voice demos using GarageBand 2.0. It's very easy to understand, has a remarkably clean and beautiful interface, and frankly unbeatable features for the money (included in the iLife suite, which retails for $50), mixing audio recording with software instruments and MIDI tracks. Still, it has its limitations - not least of which, it's Mac-only, it's limited in terms of how it can process audio, and it's a CPU and memory hog even on relatively recent machines.

What’s on Dubya’s iPod?

[Memex 1.1] First, Bush’s iPod is heavy on traditional country singers like George Jones, Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney. He has selections by the folk-rock singer Van Morrison, whose “Brown-Eyed Girl” is a Bush favorite, and by John Fogerty, most predictably “Centerfield,” which was played at Texas Rangers games when Bush was an owner and is still played at ballfields all over America. Apple : 2005.05.27 03.07.49

[Garoo - Blog] If I were Steve Jobs, I’d be upset to death about this. Actually, I’m not Steve Jobs, and I have an iMac, and yet I am pissed off. Why do the dumbasses who design (which isn’t quite the word, considering how much work it mustn’t be) USB hubs for the Mac mini make sure they copy the form factor, the style and the material (and with mixed success at that), and then add LEDs and logos everywhere? How stupid do you have to be to think your customers will want a hub that’s assorted their mini, only without the subtlety and sobriety that characterize Apple’s, and particularly the mini’s, design?

Macintosh and X-Box Irony and other Tech News

[Dan Century] At E3, the big video game convention, Microsoft used Apple’s Mac G5 computers to demo their games instead of an actual X-Box 2. This seems ironic as Microsoft Windows typically runs on Intel processors, however the Mac G5 and X-Box both use IBM PowerPC processors. Also seemingly ironic is the fact that Microsoft dropped support for PowerPC processors a while ago, however the OS for the X-Box 2 seems to be based on Windows 2000.

PowerBook Popping Sound

[BenClark.com] I remember a while ago that there was a problem with the PowerBooks: a popping sound coming from the speakers turning on and off, on and off, on and off, etc. Normally, this happens because the PB turns them off after a period of inactivity to save on battery power, but now it’s just spontaneously happening, even while I’m playing a sound in iTunes. growl 0.7: why I love notification

[walkah | striving towards mediocrity] the longer I go using my powerbook as my primary (only) desktop machine, the deeper certain things become ingrained in my daily routines. one big example is growl. so, in honour of the latest release (0.7) i thought i'd publicly exclaim just how much i like having growl. for those that haven't tasted this particular kool-aid: growl provides a framework so that applications (on Mac OS X) can create little popups when "things happen". so, some examples are : when the song changes in iTunes, new mail arrives, or someone says something in iChat or Adium. the interesting thing is that human brains are *really* good at recognizing patterns, and determining (almost instantly) relative importance. so, without really looking up from the code, email or blog entry i'm currently writing, i can stay on top of other things going on - without having to switch applications, etc. for example: i'm currently writing a blog post, and without changing apps (or even pausing) i can see that iTunes just...
